Kate Downie - The Sea Room

The work in this exhibition is based on a seven-week residency on the Norwegian island of Karmøy, in Autumn 2007, as part of a programme of artists’ exchanges in conjunction with Stavanger 2008 European City of Culture.

"Seascape and the sea people were beyond any known painterly cliché on the island of Karmøy. No post industrial marinas there, homage alone to the gods of leisure and recreation. No gentrified, prettified seaside townettes. Instead I discovered weirdness, haphazard charm, bleakness, and practical concerns. Personal histories mixed with ancient sagas, utter beauty in unexpected places." Kate Downie, writing in April 2008 about her experience on Karmøy.
