Ann Wegmuller - A Weather Eye

This exhibition is about the land around me, the land beside the sea and the weather conditions upon it. The paintings are an abstraction or distillation of what I have seen and felt when outside but are all painted in the studio.

Colour is very important to me and is probably the true subject of my paintings. It is like music: different sounds are like different colours. As I am an intuitive, expressionistic painter, a little self-discipline is needed and here the underlying structure or composition is very important.

Painters like Matisse, Nicolas de Stael and Richard Diebencorn liberated me from any literal translation of the subject matter and allowed me to put colours down as I felt they should be and not as they are.
