When you enter the Watermill, one of the first things you see is a balcony with the coffee shop down below. But how to get there? First you must walk past racks of books and find a staircase. We don’t mind you taking books downstairs to browse – just try not to spill any coffee on them! Once you’ve got downstairs you will probably be greeted by the sight of red leather sofas and in winter, the warmth of our wood burning stove.
Only the best is our motto! Quality coffee made on our top of the range Italian coffee machine. To ensure the best flavour, our beans are roasted to order every week and ground no more than an hour before use. Espressos and cappuccinos are made using our organic Fairtrade beans produced using the Swiss Water process. There are twelve steps to making the perfect espresso. See if you can count them!
Treat yourself to a cafetiere of a single estate coffee from Kilimanjaro or Sumatra. Again we use freshly ground beans. With your coffee you get an egg-timer so you control the brew strength – three minutes is ‘normal’ brewing time for coffee. If you like your coffee weaker – plunge sooner, for stronger coffee – take the plunge later!
No teabags! All our fine teas are organic and fairtrade and are made from loose tea leaves and served in teapots along with a jug of hot water. We also sell a range of herbal teas and hot chocolate.
In summer why not try one of our Super Smoothies. Or you can raid our cold counter for an organic fruit juices including Apple, Pear or Cranberry and Apple.
We are keeping our food simple but good. Locally made using finest produce, organic where possible. Soup, locally baked bread, and of course, cake.
Aberfeldy is proud to have been designated Scotland’s first Fairtrade Town. We source most of our food and drink from organic and Fairtrade suppliers. We do not sell high sugar content fizzy drinks manufactured by global corporations. Nor do we sell drinks made by firms that divert precious water supplies in the developing world away from local people in order to make their drinks.
“Something of a genre-buster, this: a fair-trade cafe in a converted mill that also houses what was recently voted Scotland’s best independent bookshop- and in all the far-flung fringe of rural Perthshire, off the A827. There are more than 5000 titles. Kids get a special room full of children’s books. The cafe itself occupies a glassy flank of the quirky old stone building, with a leafy vista out to the hills. With whitewashed walls, woodburning stove and a floor strewn with rugs, its like the ranch of a very erudite cowboy. Espressos, made from organic fair-trade beans, are massaged to perfection on a lovingly tended, impossibly gleaming Italian coffee machine. If you plump for a cafetiere, you even get an egg-timer to judge the strength precisely. Tea is always loose leaf; they are quite fanatical about this. There might not be a huge choice of main meals, but the dedication to percolated pleasures, sweetened by books, pastries and economic justice, will make the Watermill a great place to stop for organic soup and sandwiches as a side order to your coffee en route across the heart of Scotland.”
