Joan Miro belongs to a part of the Surrealist movement, which advocated ‘psychic automatism’ as a way of producing imagery. This means creating in the manner of a doodle, without conscious forethought. Miro and Dali were the most prominent Spanish surrealists and as with other surrealists, they were interested in the art of the untutored, such as children and the insane. Miro admired their freedom and exuberance and so using this spontaneous method, he produced many semi-abstract paintings, murals and sculptures. His work often evokes an idyllic Mediterranean world full of strange life-forms.
